SHULLSBURG: NESTLED IN THE DRIFTLESS REGION

FLATLANDERS, WE ARE NOT. DEEP RIVER VALLEYS, STEEP HILLSIDES, GENTLY ROLLING FARMLANDS…ESCAPE TO SOUTHERN WISCONSIN AND ALLOW YOUR IMAGINATION TO DRIFT

The Driftless Region is a geographic singularity unique to the world. Escaping the glaciers, which flattened the surrounding central states and shaped much of the region’s topography, it’s defined by hilly terrain, canyons, cold-water streams, and deep river valleys. It is also referred to as the “driftless region” because the absence of glaciers meant that no “drift” (or accumulated rock and soil) was left behind. Many species of flora and fauna can only be found in this region, and nowhere in the Midwest is limestone as close to the surface. Shullsburg took advantage of this condition by its proximity to mineral lead, and lies in the heart of the smaller “Lead Region.”
